Hello, my name is Aliyah Sims! I am a third-year design student at UC Davis.
My interest in repairing comes from having a dad who works well with his hands. Ever since I was young my dad was always in charge of fixing items that had broken and putting together furniture that we had purchased. I remember watching him patch holes in our walls and replace screws that had fallen out of household furniture. At times he would ask for my help and I would do my best to be as helpful as possible despite my lack of experience. The most extensive repair I have done was when I fixed a hole in my bedroom wall. I had to sand the wall down and apply spackling compound, then after it dried, I repainted the wall. It was a messy project, but I was impressed with what I accomplished.
Some of my hobbies include drawing, painting, and spending time with my friends. One thing that I enjoy about studying design is being able to get hands-on experience in many different fields. I have had the opportunity to work with a variety of materials and learn about prototyping. I would like to work in the field of UX design, this project will likely teach me skills that will be helpful in my future career.
Although I have not repaired many items, I work with my hands often and believe that this project will help me grow not only as a designer but as a person as well. I look forward to creating a helpful guide with my team.
