The rear derailleur is a part of the bike used to shift the chain between the smallest and biggest chainring/sprockets on the rear crankset. The gear assembly on the bike allows you to switch between the highest and lowest gear combinations. The derailleur can get misaligned sometimes and it is important to know the steps to realign it when this happens. This guide specifically focuses on the "Power Index System" brand of derailleurs on a Movelo bicycle.

    • Turn the bicycle upside down. Usually you would rest your bicycle on both wheels, instead now you will be resting it on the seat (try resting on a surface that doesn’t damage it).

    • Switch the bicycles chain to the lowest chainring on the rear crankset of the bicycle. (If the derailleur is faulty it may not allow you to do this so you may have to manually roll the back tire while shifting the chain onto the smallest chainring).

    • Loosen the rear screw which holds the derailleur against the frame of the bicycle and take out the derailleur slowly

    • (The derailleur is held in tension so be careful not to let it snap out instantly).

    • Take the chain off the crankset as well.

    • Pull the tension wire to maximum tension (as far back as it will let you) and then tighten the bolt with wrench while maintaining that tension

    • Get the chain back on the biggest chainring/sprocket in the rear crankset.

    • After adjusting the derailleur, get the derailleur in the correct position it should be against the bicycle rear hub .

    • Screw the nut that holds the derailleur firmly in place and make sure it is very tight against the bicycle frame.

    • The derailleur has two screws, the low adjusting screw which controls how far the derailleur moves towards the wheel and the high adjusting screw which controls how far it can move away from the wheel.

    • Adjust these screws with the screwdriver until it positions the derailleur in such a way that the front handle (shown earlier) can be used to switch from the highest to the lowest chainrings/sprockets on the rear crankset
